Shit, here we are on ennui day and i'm late. Yeah, remember inconsistency day? That's this. I would have loved to have posted but I was in River Falls Wisconsin outraging the moral majority. I feel a bit of ennui when i think of the moral majority.

ok. at the risk of scaring you off completely with my language-geekiness, i just want to say that i really dig the word 'ennui'. it was one of my holidays, of course. it's usually interpreted as 'boredom', but the shades of meaning are so much greater. it conveys a sense of weariness with life in general; a deep, listless indifference. and that's beautiful, in a way. now, if i was really going to devote a holiday to my favorite nuance-laden word, i'd have chosen 'lishnii'. it's a russian word, usually translated as 'extra' or 'spare'. but it's more along the lines of the english word 'extraneous', which is far more clumsy and technical-sounding. it implies in-the-way, unwanted, unnecessary. and in the tradition of great depressing russian literature, it often applies to people. if i had it my way, today would've been lishnii day.
